Ventilation, are you a fan?
Bathroom extraction fans benefit building occupiers by allowing for a healthier living environment.
Extraction fans are proven to reduce,
CONDENSATION - Damp walls, peeling wallpaper constantly humid and wet rooms
MOULD - Black mould can grow on damp surfaces and airborne spores can be inhaled. This can be a major problem for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions. Ventilation will reduce mold and will help your home to become a healthier environment.
BACTERIA - Bacteria need humidity to survive and grow the more humid and damper a room is combined with a higher temperature, the more that bacteria will multiply.
ODOURS-Mechanical extract fans
Any Bathroom Shower room or Toilet without an opening window should be provided with a mechanical extract fan to reduce condensation and remove odours.
The necessary performance of these extract fans is normally measured in litres per second (l/s) as follows:
* Bath/shower - 15l/s with a 15 minute overrun (after the light is switched out) if there is no opening window.
* WC - 6l/s with overrun.
Alternative rates may be applicable if the ventilation is running continuously.
Operation and Control
There are a number of control options to be considered when choosing a fan for your bathroom shower room or toilet.
Basic - generally wired in with the light switch and simply turn on and off as the light is operated this is not suitable for rooms with no opening window, this application is for additional extraction.
Timed fans - these types of fans carry on running for a time generally between five and fifteen minutes after the light switch is turned off. This type of fan is operated when the light switch or sensor is operated and automatically will shut off after the time set on the fan which is adjustable. The advantage or this type of fan is that the unit will continue to run when the room is no longer in use, continuing to clear the moisture and odour from the room.
Humidistat - Humidistat fans incorporate sensors that continually monitor the surrounding environment and when the humidity reaches a certain level the fan will turn on automatically. The fan will then stop automatically once the humidity level has been reduced to a normal level set by the fan. These types of fan usually are fully adjustable to a percentage of humidity in the air.
Continuous - this type of fan runs continuously at low speed for a trickle of air movement.
